Let’s reduce waste and increase green spaces in 2024!

 

The 15MFT Resolution Challenge:

 

1.  2022-2023: Ran 108 programs for 2469 participants.

2023-2024 GOAL: At least 120 programs and 2500 participants.

 

2.  2022-2023: Awarded 3 paid teen internships.

2023-2024 GOAL: At least 4 paid teen internships. Two so far!

 

3.  2022-2023: Planted 20 trees!

2023-2024 GOAL: Plant at least 30 trees. (Up to 12 already!)

 

4.  2022-2023: Collected data on Neutaconkanut and Blackstone Park.

2023-2024 GOAL: Continue and expand data.

 

5.  2022-2023: Cleaned and planted Columbia Park with JWU, residents, and others.

2023-2024 GOAL: Work with Sunrise PVD to remove invasive plants and maintain pollinator garden. One session so far!

 

6.  2022-2023 Community Partners: All Course Network, Blackstone Park Conservancy, Borders Farm, the City of Providence, Community Libraries of Providence, East Greenwich Parks and Rec, Eat Play Learn, Inspiring Minds, Lincoln School, PASA, Peace and Plenty Park, Providence Housing Authority, Revive the Roots Farm, RIAN, RIDE, RI Libraries, various schools and home-schoolers!

2023-2024 GOAL: Keep it going and make new friends!

 

7.  2022-2023: Fun programs integrating art, science, and community action

2023-2024 GOAL: NEW fun programs integrating art, science, and community action! Look for “Nocturnal Animals” and more on our website under “Events” or book your own.

 

8.  2022-2023: Partner with organizations making a difference.  We planted a mini forest with WRWC and Manton Heights residents!

2023-2024 GOAL: Look for more community connections, including supporting composting in schools and neighborhoods with Zero Waste Providence and the RI Recycling Club.

 

9.  2022-2023: Share Art! We had an art party at Columbia Park and Washington Park Library.

2023-2024 GOAL: Make more public art displays.

 

10:  2022-2023: Overall support.  Three grants, 43 donors, 5 board members, 3 staff, 4 interns, 2 regular volunteers, numerous partners, social media sharers, 68% of income from community-paid programming.

2023-2024 GOAL: More staff and interns.  More monthly donors.  10 new contracts already!

PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES:

 

Free Seeds through January 13th. from Ocean State Job Lot and URI Master Gardeners.

 

NO MORE PLASTIC BAGS!!!!

Now collecting new or gently used reusable shopping bags! These will be given out at community libraries in kid-decorated boxes and at local food kitchens. Bring bags to any of our events or drop off at the Washington Park Community Library. Thanks Zero Waste Providence for starting this and Manton Heights kids and others for designing boxes!

 

Baby Animals (Ages 3-5) Tuesdays 9:15-10 January 9th-February 13th.

Explore the life cycles of birds, butterflies, bees, frogs, and farm animals through art and science with 15 Minute Field Trips!  Paint, create, and play as we build vocabulary and fine-motor skills. Parents join the fun. $70

Winter Animals (Ages 5-12) Thursdays 4:15-5:15 January 11th -March 7th.

Explore the wild world of winter animals through art and science!  Learn how to identify animal tracks and habitats, make a baby owl that was winter-hatched, build a tick-eating opossum out of repurposed materials, create a clay frog while learning its winter adaptations, and more! $170

January 13th 2-3:30 Winter Animals at Blackstone Park. The temperature is dropping and there might even be snow.  What’s an animal to do? Learn how animals adapt by changing color, building shelters, burrowing, hibernating, or even migrating.  See if you can spot squirrel dreys, tree hollows, and more as we look for tracks, scat, and food remains. Explore our growing collection of skulls, exoskeletons, and furs, including a snowshoe hare fur and coyote skull! FREE!

February 10th 2-3:30 Likable Lichens. Bundle up and join us for a lichen scavenger hunt! Learn about the amazing tardigrade!

February 20-21, 9-11 a.m. Space Camp! in East Greenwich (Ages 5-12) Create constellations, solar “slime”, sundials, mini earths, and a rocket over two action-packed days.  It will be a blast! Stay tuned for registration and location.
