It is widely acknowledged that quality management and continuous improvement can be implemented in virtually any process within any organization. The MBNQA was established to recognize US-based organizations that meet the MBNQA criteria and have demonstrated excellence in implementing quality management systems across various categories and industry classifications.

Summary of MBNQA:

The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Improvement Act was enacted on August 20, 1987. It introduced the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) to promote quality management and recognize American companies with effective quality management systems, presented by the President of the United States.

Named after Malcolm Baldrige, the program and award honour a former ranch hand who attended Yale, achieved business success, and served in the Ronald Reagan Cabinet as the United States Secretary of Commerce from 1981 to 1987. Baldrige tragically passed away in a rodeo accident when the horse he was riding during cattle roping fell on him.

Each year, up to three awards are presented in each of the six sector-specific categories.
