Industry News / Events / Opportunities / Consulting Growth Areas

It’s been a whirlwind February, with the first two weeks spent consulting in sunny Greece, followed by an exciting time preparing students for their consulting careers, interviews, and projects. A huge thank you to Liverpool, Loughborough, Cambridge Judge, and HEC Paris Business Schools for the warm welcome. Your stories and insights have inspired me to write this month’s feature article, where I explore the growing sectors in the management and strategy consulting space. I hope you find it insightful!

Looking ahead to March, I’ll be continuing my consulting work while also supporting Birmingham Business School and planning a series of upcoming online courses and events. A quick reminder: my popular ‘Cracking Case Interviews’ course is still available, but it will be coming down in March, so be sure to check it out HERE before it's gone.

I’m excited to share that our newsletter community has now grown to over 1,400 subscribers! If you haven’t subscribed yet, you can do so at the bottom of this issue. And for those who prefer, PDF versions are also available for download HERE.

Where Consulting is Growing?

(Emerging Locations and High-Demand Segments)

The consulting industry is evolving rapidly, with new markets and specialised segments driving demand. While traditional hubs like New York and London remain dominant, emerging locations and niche sectors are offering exciting opportunities for aspiring consultants. Here’s a look at where and what is growing in consulting.

Emerging Consulting Hubs

While global firms still have strongholds in established cities, new consulting hotspots are emerging due to business expansion, digital transformation, and economic growth.

  • Dubai & the Middle East - With massive investments in infrastructure, sustainability, and economic diversification, the UAE and Saudi Arabia are driving demand for strategy and digital transformation consultants.

  • Singapore & South East Asia - As a financial and tech hub, Singapore leads in fintech, digital consulting, and sustainability, with Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand growing as new markets.

  • Berlin & Amsterdam - These European cities are becoming major hubs for tech consulting, AI strategy, and green energy transition.

  • Austin & Toronto - Known for booming tech and AI industries, these cities attract digital strategy and innovation consulting roles.

Firms are expanding into these locations as clients seek localised expertise, regulatory insights, and industry specialisation.

High-Growth Segments in Consulting

Beyond geography, certain consulting segments are growing faster than others due to shifting market needs.

  1. Digital & AI Transformation Consulting

With AI revolutionising business operations, firms need experts to integrate AI, data analytics, and automation. Companies like Accenture, BCG Gamma, and Deloitte Digital are leading this charge.

💡 Key skills: AI strategy, machine learning, cloud computing.

  1. ESG & Sustainability Consulting

As businesses face stricter environmental and governance regulations, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) consulting is booming. Firms are helping companies with carbon reduction, green energy, and ethical business practices.

💡 Key firms: McKinsey Sustainability, PwC ESG, ERM.

  1. Healthcare & Life Sciences Consulting

The pandemic accelerated healthcare innovation, digital health, and biotech investments, creating high demand for healthcare strategy and operational consultants.

💡 Key firms: ZS Associates, IQVIA, LEK Consulting.

  1. Cybersecurity & Risk Consulting

With rising cyber threats, companies seek consultants to strengthen security frameworks, prevent data breaches, and manage compliance.

💡 Key firms: Booz Allen Hamilton, EY Cybersecurity, KPMG Risk Advisory.

  1. Cost Efficiency & Productivity Consulting

With global economic uncertainty, companies are seeking ways to cut costs, improve efficiency, and optimise operations. Consultants specializing in lean management, process automation, and financial restructuring are in high demand.

💡 Key firms: Bain Performance Improvement, AlixPartners, The Hackett Group, Newton Europe, Proudfoot, DSS+.
💡 Key skills: Lean Six Sigma, financial modelling, process automation.

What This Means for Aspiring Consultants

As consulting expands beyond traditional sectors, students and young professionals should align their skills with emerging trends. Developing knowledge and skills in AI, ESG, healthcare, or cybersecurity can make you more attractive in high-growth fields, while being open to new global locations can increase job opportunities. However, don't forget that it is your 'consulting mindset' and soft skills such as dealing with ambiguity, entrepreneurialism, leadership and strategic problem solving that recruiters look for hence you need to exemplify your achievements in these areas.

For those looking to break in, the key is to stay informed, upskill, and network within these fast-growing areas. The future of consulting is evolving—those who adapt will lead the way.
