We recently completed a Toronto Artwork Appraisal for one of our local estate clients. We came across many outstanding pieces in the estate, and one of which was this sweet jade carving by well known and highly sought after Canadian sculptor Lyle Sopel. It depicts a bear rubbing and scratching his back against a tree, foliated with carved jades in the form of leaves. Standing 16" tall, the skill and imagination of the artist is obvious and impressive.

Toronto Artwork Appraisal - Lyle Sopel Canadian Sculptor

Lyle Sopel, born on December 29, 1951, in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, is a renowned sculptor celebrated for his exceptional mastery in transforming jade and semi-precious gemstones into intricate works of art. Over a career spanning more than three decades, Sopel has garnered international acclaim, with his creations gracing the collections of royalty, heads of state, and art connoisseurs worldwide.

Early Life and Education

Growing up in Richmond, Sopel developed an early appreciation for nature and the arts. At 19, a transformative experience in Amsterdam, where he encountered a Van Gogh painting, solidified his desire to pursue a career in visual arts. He pursued formal art education at Langara College in Vancouver, Canada, now known as Langara University.

Artistic Development and Philosophy

Sopel is largely self-taught in the art of sculpting hard stones, including jade and other semi-precious gemstones. His artistic philosophy centers on the belief that humans and animals share a common spirit, a sentiment he strives to capture in his sculptures. This perspective is evident in his work, which often portrays wildlife with a lifelike and emotive quality.

Career Highlights

In 1987, National Geographic Magazine recognized Sopel as one of the world's leading contemporary jade sculptors.

His sculptures have been exhibited globally, including shows in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Europe. Notable exhibitions include "JOY" at Canada House Gallery in Banff, Alberta, and participation in the New York Art Exposition.

Notable Commissions

Sopel's expertise has led to prestigious commissions, such as:

  • 2003: Creating the largest jade Buddha in North America for a private collection in Palm Springs, California.

  • 2015: Crafting a jade Buddha head for a VIP private collection in San Diego, California.

  • 2015: Designing a presentation gift for the 20th anniversary of sister province relations between British Columbia, Canada, and Guangdong Province, China.

Artistic Style and Techniques

Sopel's sculptures are distinguished by their dynamic interplay of realism and abstraction. He often incorporates embellishments of quartz crystal, amethyst, lapis lazuli, rubies, and other gemstones, adding depth and vibrancy to his pieces. His creative process begins with an intimate connection to the raw stone, allowing its natural form to inspire the final composition. This approach results in one-of-a-kind masterpieces that resonate with a spiritual and emotional presence.

Personal Interests

Beyond his artistic endeavors, Sopel is an avid outdoor enthusiast, engaging in activities such as mountain biking, hiking, and bodybuilding. He also has a keen interest in science, particularly quantum physics, and enjoys exploring various forms of visual and performing arts. Travel plays a significant role in his life; he actively seeks out new experiences by visiting national museums, attending fine art events, and collaborating with like-minded artists across the globe.

Family and Legacy

Sopel's personal life is deeply intertwined with his art. He has been married to his business partner and visionary wife for over 35 years. Their son, Kurtis, is a sculpting protégé, excelling in digital arts and music. The family's commitment to the arts extends to their studio, where they foster a nurturing environment for creativity and innovation.

Publications

In addition to his sculptures, Sopel has contributed to the literary world with his book, Alluring Presence, which showcases a collection of his original jade and gemstone sculptures. The book offers readers an intimate look into his creative process and the stories behind his masterpieces.

Recognition and Influence

Sopel's influence extends beyond his sculptures. His work has inspired novice artists worldwide, and his pieces are collected globally, reflecting his impact on the art community. His dedication to his craft and his innovative approach to gemstone sculpting continue to captivate and inspire audiences, ensuring his legacy as a master artist endures.

Conclusion

Lyle Sopel's journey from a young man inspired by a Van Gogh painting to a master sculptor of jade and gemstones is a testament to his passion, dedication, and profound connection to nature. His work not only captures the essence of the natural world but also invites viewers to experience the spiritual and emotional depth embedded within each piece. As he continues to create and inspire, Sopel's legacy as a pioneer in gemstone sculpture remains firmly established.
